Pumpkins are used around the world to celebrate Autumn or Fall. For centuries they have played a big part in harvest festivals and thanksgiving. Did you know that before pumpkins were popular in Ireland, the Irish celebrated harvest with turnips. Pumpkins originated in the Americas primarily in Southern Mexico, Central America and Northern Peru. Pumkins have been a domesticated crop in North America for hundreds of years. When the Europeans came to America in the 1500s explorers brought these New World crops back home to Europe.
Pumpkins are such a popular item when decorating for Autumn or Fall. Their beautiful colours capture the beauty of the season. They also come in such a variety of shapes and sizes making them perfect to stack, group or on their own. As well as their glorious range of colours of oranges, muted greens, cream, greys and even soft pinks make them so useful for any colour scheme. They also pair wonderfully with chrysanthamums, fall leaves and other autumn icons.

Pumpkins are a crafter's dream. Real ones can be carved or painted. Artificial ones are painted and decorated to mix with our own home decor. We love to make our own by sewing them, crochet them or knit them as they are easy to make. Wood workers cut out pumpkin shapes for us to decorate, candle makers make pumpkin shaped and scented candles.
